Tour des Chutes Century/100-Miler:

The route uses portions of 2 proposed State Scenic Bikeway routes: McKenzie Pass and Twin Bridges Loop. The course winds its way to the quiet town of Sisters, with a great rest stop complete with mechanical support from Blazin Saddles.  Riding on mostly low-traffic country roads, you’ll pass farm areas with beautiful views of several Cascade Peaks. From Sisters, the route heads up McKenzie Pass, arguably one of the most beautiful and varied rides in all of Central Oregon. The twisty, narrow, and basically constant climb gains 2170 ft in slightly less than 16 miles.  It transitions through stately stands of Ponderosa, mixed Fir, Lodgepole, and finally breaks out into the windswept, moonscape lava fields and the turn-around point at Dee Wright Observatory.  After a revitalizing descent back to Sisters, the route meanders its way back to the small town of Tumalo using a portion of the second State Scenic Bikeway, Twin Bridges Loop. From there, its a gentle climb back to Bend, and the well-earned Post Ride Party.

Special note: This route contains an unavoidable 2.5-mile section on heavily traveled Hwy 20.  Use caution and ride single file!

Total gain: 3760 feet        Follow WHITE arrows.

  • 6:00 am start?  Are we kidding?  NO, we want you back for the great food and music at the Post Ride Party before it closes @ 3:00 pm.
  • This is a challenging Century, and may take longer than you anticipate.
  • If you can’t average 15mph on the flats, we recommend the 72- miler.
  • You can drop your ‘layers’ at the Sisters Rest Stop. Place them in a bag with your name on it, and claim at the venue after your ride.  Before you discard layers, make sure you won’t need them on the descent of the pass.
  • Descend under control…watch for traffic and debris on the road.

This route uses 18 miles of the proposed Sisters-Smith Rock State Scenic Bikeway.  The course winds its way from Bend to Lower Bridge Road and the Scenic Bikeway, passing farm areas with some beautiful views of several Cascade Peaks.  Once on Lower Bridge Road, the ride offers some great high desert scenery, a few climbs, rolling terrain, and some possible sidebar entertainment as it passes a large Alpaca ranch.  Turning south, the route traverses the agricultural area west of Redmond, and zig-zags its way back to the town of Tumalo, using low-traffic rural roads.  More amazing Cascade views.  From Tumalo, the route gently climbs back to Bend, and the Post Ride Party.
Special note:  This route contains an unavoidable 2.5-mile section of heavily traveled Hwy. 20.  Use caution and ride single file!
